When General James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia in 1733 and then created the town of Savannah, he quickly realized the importance of establishing a marker for ships at the mouth of Savannah River on Tybee Island. He immediately ordered the construction of a 90 foot wooden tower that was completed in 1736. The original tower was destroyed by a storm in 1741, the next wooden tower by the encroaching sea, and in 1773 a third tower was built (this time using brick). This tower was severely damaged during the Civil War but was reconstructed in 1866. The bottom 60 feet was able to be salvaged and this served as the base of the new tower which reached the impressive height of 154 feet!

In 1886 a rare earthquake struck Tybee Island and once again the light house needed some tender loving care. But due to the tireless efforts of Tybee Island’s Historical Society visitors are able to enjoy one of America’s most intact and historic light stations! This 5 acre site is home not only to the remarkable light house but to 5 original historic outbuildings as well. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse for the best view of Savannah’s Beach and you can also rent the site for an event large or small. Tybee Island’s Light House is a sought after and romantic venue for weddings.

Come early and plan to stay late as this is one of Tybee’s busiest days of the year and the island fills up fast. The show starts around dark thirty (around 9:15pm). The fireworks are staged on the pier, but they are easily viewed from any of Tybee’s eastern beaches.
