A Letter from our Mayor: Helping Members of the U.S. Coast Guard

Marine Rescue Squadron, Tybee Island, GA is collecting gift cards for the Coast Guard and you can help!

From Tybee Island, GA Mayor Jason Buelterman

Tybee and the Savannah area are served by several local Coast Guard units: the Coast Guard Air Station at Hunter, the Savannah Marine Safety Unit, the Aid to Navigation Unit, the Cutter Unit and Station Tybee Unit. The men and women who serve in these Units are still at work on behalf of all of us on Tybee and our area but are not getting paid due to the shutdown.

The Tybee Marine Rescue Squadron (MRS) is asking our community to provide gift cards for local Coast Guard members to help them get through this difficult period. Specifically, they are seeking donations of gift cards for gas and groceries. The cards must be in increments of no more than $20.

If you want to help, the cards can be dropped off at Tybee City Hall at 403 Butler Avenue to City Clerk, Jan Leviner. The MRS will be collecting the cards until February 1. If you have any questions, contact MRS member and Tybee Council Member Barry Brown at 912-656-5589.

We have reached out to our representatives in Congress urging them to end this shutdown. Regardless of politics and political parties, the bottom line is that those who serve our community, often at risk to their own lives, should NOT be forced to work without pay under any circumstances.

Chatham County is one of only three counties in the nation to be designated as a ‘Coast Guard Community’. As such, we are committed to supporting U.S. Coast Guard morale and welfare.

Please support this wonderful initiative of the local MRS.

If you are out of town and would like to mail cards, they can be sent to:

City of Tybee Island
PO Box 2749
Tybee Island, GA 31328
c/o ‘MRS/Coast Guard’
