Rainy Days on Tybee

So, you have spent months planning your perfect Tybee Beach Vacation, booked a great place to stay, packed up the rental car and then…RAIN. In fact, it looks like it may rain every day that you are there. But don’t turn around and head back home! First of all, it rarely rains all day especially in the summer time. You may wake up to a storm but a couple hours later the sun is back out. Secondly, there are still plenty of things to do even if the rain decides to linger.

Your vacation does not have to look like this!!!

Take advantage of the rain and do a little gallery and gift shop browsing.  Tybee has many places that feature the work of talented, local artists.   One of my favorite places to go is Fish Art!  Not only is it place to find stunning, unique pieces but it a junk/antique shop too.

Ralph Douglas Jones owner of Fish Art and all around great guy.

Rainy Days equal shopping in our book and Tybee has plenty of options.  Seaside Sisters really stands out with their amazing assortment of jewelry, accessories, and home decor.  The Misty Marsh Shoppe is a fantastic place to visit as well.  In addition to their one of a kind jewelry, including the exclusive “Hooked on Tybee” line of bracelets and rings, they have women’s apparel, locally made soaps, specialty gifts, cards and incredible stained glass.

Not much of a shopper?  That’s ok.  Spend the day at the Tybee Island Lighthouse.  It was ordered to be built by General James Oglethorpe in 1732 and has been guiding mariners safe entrance into the Savannah River for over 270 years.  Pretty neat, huh?Adults: $9.00
Seniors: $7.00 (62+)
Children: $7.00 (6-17) Free (5 and under)
Groups: $7.00 (10 or more people) with a reservation.
Military: $7.00 (Must present ID)
Coast Guard: Free (Must present ID)

After that, stop by the Tybee Marine Science Center.  You can see baby alligators, polka-dot batfish, spider crabs, a loggerhead sea turtle hatchling, diamondback terrapins, a corn snake, box turtle, horseshoe crab and all the other creatures waiting just for you! Admission is $4 per person; kids four and under are free. The gallery is open daily from 10 to 5.

My favorite thing to do on Tybee while it is raining is to eat and drink.  The Crab Shack is always a good choice especially if you have kids.  There are great seafood options and delicious margaritas but children won’t feel left out, they have their own menu.  Oh, did I mention an alligator lagoon, exotic birds, and an amazing view?  Hand your kids $5-10 dollars a piece and send them to the gift shop.  They can purchase food to feed the gators and you can have some much deserved peace and quiet.

all unattended children will be fed to the...oh, I'm just kidding.

If it is only gently raining, this is the BEST time to go beach combing.  There will be no one else out there and all the treasures that have washed ashore can be yours.  Unless it is still alive and then you should throw it back.  During your stay on Tybee I HIGHLY recommend taking a beach ecology trip with Dr. Joe.  This is a great opportunity to discover and learn all about the animals that call Tybee their home.

Hopefully, after reading this you will not despair if you arrive at Tybee in the middle of some rain.  Just remember, it won’t last forever.  The sun will come out…  Also, take some time and realize there are always chances to experience new things and have fun! Tybee is a beautiful place to visit, rain or shine!

It was beautiful yesterday and today is pretty nice too. The weather channel misses the mark here most of the time.

Hi Denise, that is not the case. However due to the ocean we do get afternoon storms. Most of the time they pop up in the late afternoon and are over quickly, 30 min to an hour at most. August is our rainiest month.

Hi Dottie, we promote everything from the Tybee Post Theater. This post was written in 2014 before the Theater reopened.
