Tybee Senior Paddling

Calling all Tybee and Savannah Seniors! Want to find a new beneficial activity to help you feel fit and in shape? Why not try kayaking?  It is low impact and easy on the joints, can potentially be a full body work out (great for the abs), you can paddle as fast or as slow as you want, and since there is so much to learn and see, it keeps your brain engaged! Enjoy fishing, photography, travel, and camping? Kayaking is the puzzle piece you have been missing! Join co-owner of Sea Kayak Georgia, Marsha Henson, and long time Tybee resident, Marie Milburn, for The Tybee Senior Paddling Group. This group is for fun, fitness, and anyone claiming to be a senior.

Sea Kayak Georgia

Kayaking is an excellent sport for anyone looking to improve their overall health.  Turning the kayak relies on the shifting and turning of the core area of your body. Each turn of the kayak results in the use of these muscles and, over time, builds this area. Another exercise benefit of kayaking is the isometric effect on your legs. Pressure applied by the legs assists in turning and balancing the kayak. The tightening of your leg muscles will gradually increase their strength. Your shoulder and arm muscles are used to push the paddle through the water for movement. These repetitive motions  increase the muscle mass and the tone of your arms and shoulders. These brisk movements raise your heart rate and promote cardiovascular health. One aspect of kayaking that often goes overlooked is the positive effect it will have on your mental health. This peaceful exercise in a natural setting allows you time to collect your thoughts and forget about the world around you. This leads to stress relief and a more positive mental state.

2015 Schedule for the Tybee Senior Paddling Group:

  • Wednesday, March 11, 1:30 pm:  First meeting, on land meeting at Sea Kayak Georgia
  • Wednesday, March 18, 11:00am to 2:00pm:  First Paddle will discuss meeting time and location at the meeting 3/11
  • Monday, April 6, 8:30am to 11:30am:  Group Paddle & sign up for what to bring to “Pot Luck” cookout
  • Wednesday, April 20 4:30pm to 6:30pm:  “Pot Luck” Cookout at Marie’s backyard Chimney Creek
  • Thursday, April 21 11:00am-2:00pm:  Group Paddle

    My husband and I are both seniors who purchased a home on the South end of Tybee last year. We have spent a lot of time on the repairs and now, want to have some fun
    Are there kayak lessons available for seniors?

    i have never kayaked but would love to learn…it really kind of scares me too!
