Tybee Island’s largest hotel/motel complex has been renamed! The Ocean Plaza Resort has new owners and management staff and is now called HOTEL TYBEE.  They have completed phase one of a three-part renovation plan and look forward to seeing more visitors and locals. Hotel Tybee is 100 feet from the beach and a block away from Tybrisa Street, which has numerous shops and restaurants/bars. The Tybee Marine Science Center is adjacent to the hotel and has educational and entertaining displays and tanks with live, local sea creatures. The pier and pavilion is within view and provides the perfect spot to fish, meet poolnew friends, see the fireworks displays, and people watch. Just leave your car in the free parking lot at the hotel and have fun exploring the area! The Tybee Lighthouse is just 2 1/2 miles from the hotel, so you could walk, drive, bike, or take a golfcart cab to see it. You may also want to drive (or take a shuttle) 18 miles to historic Savannah to see the fabulous house and art museums, lush squares and parks, and impressive forts.

bathroomHotel Tybee’s 208 rooms have been completely updated and feature tropical décor, large flat-screen TVs, and complimentary toiletries by Paya Organics. Of course, all of the usual in-room amenities are provided and the staff is dedicated to providing a clean and comfortable space for you. Options include rooms with private balconies overlooking the beach, inland rooms, two queen beds or one king bed. Their online reservation system allows you to quickly book your vacation on Tybee.

mapIf you are planning a business event, reunion, or wedding, the helpful staff at Hotel Tybee can assist you! There is a 5000 square foot banquet room, conference center, meeting rooms, business center, and catering available on-site. Your event participants can enjoy the pools, shopping, and beach when they aren’t involved in their pre-planned activities.

Most visitors think the BEST thing about Tybee is the quirky vibe of our little island. It’s a place like no other, with zany local characters and interesting places to truly “get away from it all.” It’s a casual and fun-loving town with about 3500 friendly year-round residents. You can have a taste of the beachbum lifestyle and indulge in the more sophisticated charms of nearby Savannah. We are sure that you will have a wonderful time here!

Hotel Tybee History:
Tybee Island was a mostly undeveloped tropical island situated 12 miles east of Savannah in the 1880s when businessman Daniel Purse bought most of the island with the intention of transforming it into a seaside resort destination. There were no roads to Tybee at the time. To overcome the obstacle of a two-hour boat ride from Savannah, Purse built a railroad connecting Tybee to Savannah. Th9086HOTEcvr.inddousands of new tourists began flocking to Tybee’s beautiful beaches, though most could not stay due to inadequate lodging accommodations. In 1889, Savannah National Bank president and future mayor of Savannah Herman Myers and investors constructed Hotel Tybee, which was one of the finest hotels in the country. For over seven decades, Hotel Tybee hosted vacations, conventions, social events, and gambling. The establishment was ravaged by fire in 1909 but was resurrected more magnificent than before. It witnessed hurricanes, wars, a riot, murder, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. For More info you can find the book: HOTEL TYBEE

Hotel Tybee is a great place to stay but saying it has been completely renovated is misleading. We stayed here last year for our anniversary for the first time and it was fine for the price. We were told it would be fully updated by the same time next year. We are here now for our anniversary again and the staff said we would be excited about the wonderful updates. We got to our room and it’s the same. Still yellow walls, old furniture, and old tiled bathroom. The only thing new is the palm tree comforter from last year is gone , and the tv was replaced with a flat screen. The bathroom is the same old bathroom with a vanity update but it’s too large for the space. I still like the hotel and hope the transition will continue because we love Tybee Island, but with everything seeming the same in our room it’s odd to hear everyone say it’s all new and fully updated. Keep up the work Hotel Tybee! It can still become an awesome place if finished. 🙂

Hi Kimberly, I think it depends on the room you get. Some have been fully updated while others have only been partially updated. I believe they are doing blocks of 20 at a time and it will be another 2 years before they complete the project. 🙂 Glad you love the hotel and plan on continuing your visits.

I’ve been staying here since 2007. I love love love it. Even tho the last time I stayed the motel was getting kinda run down. I was happy. We had a sweet housekeeper ,I wish I could remember her name. Anyway. I love it. I try to come during the pirate festival. I would get up and watch the sunrise out the coral reef windows just gorgeous. Can’t wait to come agin and see all the new updates. I was there in 2013 the last time 🙁

This place is gorgeous! I would love to stay there with my family, but we aren’t ever able to take a vacation due to our finances. If you ever have a free vacation give away my family would love to go and visit your new hotel.
